Data Center Water Use and Cooling Systems
A water figure is not meaningful until it says what is counted. Withdrawal, consumption, discharge, potable supply, reclaimed supply, average use, and peak-day demand describe different things.
WHAT TO EVALUATE
Define the boundary
Ask whether the figure covers the facility, cooling system, or indirect water associated with electricity generation. Keep direct and indirect estimates separate.
Closed loop is not always zero
Water may recirculate inside a closed loop while cooling towers or other heat-rejection equipment consume water outside that loop.
Compare average and peak
Request peak potable and reclaimed-water demand, drought operations, backup modes, discharge, and the source of every estimate.

Do all data centers use the same amount of water?
No. Climate, load, cooling design, supply temperature, economizer hours, redundancy, and heat rejection can produce very different profiles.
