DATA CENTER COMMUNITY GUIDE
Data Center Power Use, PUE, and Grid Questions
Power discussions become clearer when maximum demand, average demand, phased capacity, and annual energy are kept separate. The computing load is only part of the facility total.
WHAT TO EVALUATE
Separate IT and facility load
IT load powers servers, storage, and networking. Total facility load also includes cooling, power conversion, lighting, and other support systems.
Use PUE with context
PUE divides total facility energy by IT energy. It describes overhead, but not the generation source, grid impact, or who pays for upgrades.
Ask for the phased maximum
Request demand by phase, maximum expected load, interconnection milestones, required grid work, cost allocation, and the role of on-site generation.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Clear answers for a better public record.
Does a low PUE mean low electricity use?
Not necessarily. A very large computing load can still create high total demand even when support systems are efficient.
What is the most important power number?
Compare maximum megawatts, expected annual energy, phase dates, PUE assumptions, interconnection status, and grid-upgrade cost responsibility.
