Sound should be evaluated at the people and places that receive it, under the operating conditions most likely to matter. A single daytime property-line dBA result rarely tells the full story.

Use consistent measurements

Compare levels in the same unit, location, time period, weather conditions, and operating state. Decibels are logarithmic.

Include low-frequency sound

dBA is common in ordinances, while dBC retains more low-frequency energy. Octave-band and tonal analysis can reveal hum or rumble.

Test real operating cases

Address nighttime background, full cooling load, generator testing, emergency operation, and post-construction verification at residential receptors.
